Car Key Replacement Cost: Locksmith vs. Dealership

What drives the price of a new car key, and when a mobile locksmith or a dealer makes more sense.

Not long ago, replacing a car key meant a quick trip to the hardware store. Today, most car keys contain a small electronic chip that talks to the car's immobilizer, and many vehicles use remote-head keys or keyless smart fobs. That technology makes cars much harder to steal — and it also makes replacing a key more involved. If you've lost a key or need a spare, you generally have two choices: a dealership or an automotive locksmith. Here's an honest comparison to help you decide.

What kind of key do you have?

The type of key is the single biggest factor in cost. Here are the common types, from simplest to most complex:

  • Basic metal key — no chip, found on many older vehicles. Simple to cut.
  • Transponder (chip) key — looks like a basic key but has a chip in the plastic head that must be programmed to the car.
  • Remote-head key — a transponder key with lock/unlock buttons built into the head.
  • Separate remote — a key fob that only locks and unlocks doors, used alongside a key.
  • Smart key / proximity fob — used for push-button start; the car detects it nearby.

Our starting prices

At All Lockouts Locksmith, remotes start at $65, transponder/chip keys at $120, remote-head keys at $150 and smart key fobs at $180. These are starting prices — the final quote depends on your exact vehicle, the key, and whether you still have a working key, and we always confirm it before dispatch.

What affects the price

  • Year, make and model — some vehicles use more expensive keys or require special programming equipment.
  • Whether you have a working key — adding a spare is usually simpler than starting from zero.
  • Key quality — OEM and quality aftermarket keys differ in price and durability.
  • Time and location — late-night emergency calls can cost more.
  • Whether the car needs to be towed — a dealer requires the car on site; a mobile locksmith comes to it.

Dealership: pros and cons

A dealership has direct access to factory keys and software for the brands it sells, and for some newer or high-security vehicles, the dealer may be the only option. On the other hand, dealers typically work during business hours only, may need to order a key, and require the vehicle to be at the dealership. If you've lost all your keys, that often means a tow, which adds cost and time.

Mobile locksmith: pros and cons

An automotive locksmith comes to you — your driveway, your workplace, or the parking lot where the key went missing. Many keys can be cut and programmed on the spot, often the same day and outside normal business hours. Prices are frequently lower because there's no tow and less overhead. The trade-off is that not every vehicle can be handled by a locksmith; some require dealer-only parts or software. A good locksmith will tell you that before taking your money.

How to compare quotes fairly

  1. Have your year, make, model and VIN ready.
  2. Ask for the total price, including the key, cutting, programming and the service call.
  3. Ask about towing costs if you're quoting a dealer.
  4. Ask how long it will take and whether the key needs to be ordered.
  5. Ask what happens if the key won't program — reputable providers don't charge for a key that doesn't work.

Can a locksmith make a key without the original?

Often yes. Using the VIN, the door lock or the ignition, a locksmith can usually originate a new key and program it. You'll need to show photo ID and proof of ownership such as registration or title.

Bottom line

For most common vehicles, a mobile locksmith is faster and more convenient, and often less expensive. For some newer or specialty vehicles, the dealer may be required. Call us with your vehicle details and we'll tell you honestly which route makes sense — and give you a starting price before you commit.
